When
rebuilding Chevy II engines, test carefully for cracks that
develop from the oil line into the lifter bores intersecting
the water jackets.
Reports
have been received regarding these cracks particularly in
194, 230 and 250 CID engines.
To date
no practical method of repairing the cracks has been discovered
because they are inaccessible.
It
is advisable to subject these engines to pressure tests prior
to rebuilding because the cracks are not always detected by
magnetic particle inspection and may, when not discovered,
result in coolant seepage into the crankcase.
