Plasma Spray Molybdenum “Moly”
Hard and wear resistant; prevents bore scuffing when using high-tensile iron and steel compression rings; porosity traps lubricating oil; can be used with majority of bore materials
Chrome
Hard, wear resistant, and low friction; prevents bore scuffing when using high-tensile iron and steel rings; can be used to coat the face and sides of rings (triple chrome); preferred over Moly in dusty environments where the porosity of moly can trap contaminates; primarily for use on cast iron bores

Manganese Phosphate
Prevents corrosion and eliminates galling of rings during startup and break-in; used on iron or steel compression rings
Ceramic PVD
Face coating that provides very low coefficient of friction, thus reducing drag... provides high scuff and heat resistance, and excellent sealing; usually done in conjunction with Gas-Nitride on stainless steel rings; compatible with Nikasil-coated cylinder bores
Gas-Nitride
Hardening process for better wear resistance and longer life, can be applied to an entire ring set
